Failover is the process of moving to a healthy standby component, during a failure or maintenance event, in order to preserve uptime. The quicker it can be done, the faster you can be back online. However, failover can be tricky for transactional database systems as we strive to preserve data integrity - especially in asynchronous or semi-synchronous topologies. There are risks associated, from diverging datasets to loss of data.
